Roller derby players push for more donors
New partnership with Winnipeg Roller Derby League to be announced

WHAT: More than bragging rights are on the line this fall for players from the Winnipeg Roller Derby League (WRDL). The league has partnered with Canadian Blood Services for the new WRDL Blood Donor Challenge.

“Our League strives to give back to our community and blood is something that is used in Manitoba everyday. We can all think of a time where a family member needed this service when sick or injured. Our members all want to do their part to raise awareness regarding donating blood and make sure that our local blood banks remain full,” says Laura Medwid (AKA Foxy FireCracksHer), Director of Operations.

WRDL teams Backseat Betties, The Corporation and Valkyries’ Wrath along with the league’s newest skaters (AKA Fresh Meat) and referees (AKA Zebra Crew) will battle it out to see which team can fill the most donor beds at the Winnipeg Blood Donor Clinic, 777 William Ave. The challenge is open to the public. To donate on behalf of your favourite team, please call 1 888 2 DONATE (1-888-236-6283).

Along with encouraging others to give, players will help raise awareness about the importance of blood donation at the 2011 Roller Derby Championship by wearing their ABO blood type on their uniforms. More than 2,000 fans are expected to attend the event on September 24 at Winnipeg Convention Centre. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.ca.

The Winnipeg Roller Derby League (WRDL) is interested in seeing your portfolio of work for consideration as we plan for our next bout at the Winnipeg Convention Centre. Attendance at this event is expected to be in the 2000+ range.
Specifically, the WRDL is in need of professionally designed images that will be used to create marketing materials including posters, postcards and access passes.

Our process for selecting a designer/artist will be as follows:

April 12 - 26, printed portfolios will be accepted.
(No electronic submissions please. All portfolios will be returned.)

April 27 or 28, The WRDL Bout Committee will create a shortlist consisting of three or four portfolios.

April 29 to May 3, WRDL league members will vote for their favourite portfolio from those on the shortlist.

May 4, selected designer/artist will be contacted and a contract will be signed.

May 15, final artwork submitted to the league.

Our specific requirements for this project include:

Completed artwork must be submitted to the WRDL by deadline using a design program such as Photoshop or Illustrator with text as separate layers. Resolutions of product artwork must be not less than 300 dpi when image is at actual print size.

That all product artwork created becomes the exclusive property of the WRDL and that the WRDL has the exclusive rights to the reproduction of all artwork and the artists relinquish all rights to such design. Any characters developed in the designs become the sole property of WRDL and their likeness may be used in future WRDL product and design.

That the project be completed within our budgeted amount.

Roller Derby Hoedown
After being cooped up in a farmer’s quonset all winter, practicing amongst the hay bales, tractors, cows and chickens, the RDRDA clan can’t wait to get out. Come see the Belladonnas take on Winnipeg’s Murder City Maidens in a good ol` fashioned Derby Hoedown Saturday, April 10th, 2010.

Not only is it a great family event, you can watch some utterly amazing derby action! The girls have been dyin’ to drop the garden hoes and hit some hoes. Come dressed showing support of these redneck gals. There will be prizes for the best overall costumes at the end of the game!
